How the WitWorks Founders Met

Katie and Alex 2011

Leading an improv workshop for middle schoolers.

I am always excited to recount how I met my co-founder, Alex because it felt like (get ready) a magical moment. I know. Ugh. It gets worse! I even wrote a song that pays homage to this moment. Eww! I know. But I've only had a few moments in my life where I felt this type of mystical universe pull, so I mustn't downplay it.

If you're still with me, thanks for hanging in there. So here is what happened. There I was on the Oval at the Ohio State University in the spring of 2011. Hundreds of student organizations were there with tables and flyers promoting themselves and looking to recruit new members. I was there representing my own student organization, but throughout the entire event, my eye kept being drawn to this table across the lawn. The group was beaming with laughter and joy. I could feel their energy. I didn't know who they were, but I was drawn to them.

Right before the end of the event, I decided I needed to find out who these people were. I rustled up some bravery and walked over to introduce myself. Alex, a tall skinny smiling boy, greeted me and told me that they were an improv comedy group called Fishbowl Improv. He answered some of my questions then handed me a flier and told me to come try out.

I did and it impacted the trajectory of my life. My weeks became filled with the kind of joy and laughter that hurts your face. I discovered my new favorite artistic outlet. I gained lifelong friends. Then there was the bonus I really didn't see coming; I gained wisdom from the art form that applied to my non-improv life. Improv was the ever-giving gift. I can attest that to this day, it still is. And I have my friend Alex to thank for that.
